Tasting Notes

The 2022 vintage entices the senses with deep ruby-purple hues. The aroma profile is remarkably complex, offering notes of toffee, vanilla bean, chocolate-covered blueberry and blackberry compote with suggestions of smoked meat and fruit preserve. A bold entry delivers supple flavors of raspberry, pomegranate, sage, cocoa and black cherry. Bright tannins bring the wine to a beautifully balanced conclusion.

Winemaking

Hailed decades earlier as a “jewel of ecological elements” by legendary winemaker André Tchelistcheff, DAOU Mountain was rediscovered by brothers Georges and Daniel Daou in 2007. Their quest for a sublime terroir ended here, on steep slopes that ascend to an elevation of 2,200 feet, all blessed with the type of calcareous clay soil found in the greatest appellations. DAOU Estate wines showcase the visionary talent of Winemaker Daniel Daou and the unrivaled terroir of DAOU Mountain. These wines come from the mountain’s finest vineyard blocks and are made with the utmost passion, investment and intention.

Vintage

The 2022 growing season on DAOU Mountain was initially marked by winter drought conditions that were alleviated by rains in late March and April—a miracle happenstance that replenished the soils and set the pace for healthy vine canopies to come. A later- than-usual bud break was followed by normal spring and summer weather patterns through August. A sustained 10-day heat wave began in early September, prompting an early harvest that put Daniel’s winegrowing ingenuity, artistry and experience to the test. In the end, 2022 was a winemaker’s vintage, yielding elegantly powerful and balanced wines that prove the importance of mastering grape growing and winemaking.
