Tasting Notes

This wine exhibits a deep ruby color and an enticing nose of boysenberry, black cherry, and wild huckleberry. On the palate, it mirrors these aromas with an abundance of ripe fruit, enhanced by distinctive minerality from volcanic soil. A mid-palate hint of sweet fruit, typical of the Martini clone, adds both depth and complexity. The wine is well-structured with balanced acidity and finely textured tannins, indicating its remarkable potential for aging. A sophisticated blend of vibrant fruit and nuanced acidity, suggesting an elegant and enduring profile.

Winemaking

The grapes for this wine were harvested at night to preserve freshness and integrity. They were placed in open-top fermenters for 3-5 days of cold maceration followed by fermentation. A small percentage of the grapes were left as whole cluster to preserve the buoyancy of aromatics of the fruit and to add structure and refinement to the wine. Punch downs were performed during the early stages of fermentation with the extraction becoming gentler as the wine became dry and followed with a quiet extended maceration to help modify the richness and mouthfeel of the wine. The wine was lightly pressed into small French oak barrels where it rested for 14 months.

Vintage

A near ideal vintage, 2022 produced exceptionally high-quality fruit. Winter began with ample rains and led to cool weather patterns during flowering, which supported naturally limited vine yields. A mild summer set the stage for even ripening, with veraison appearing in early July. A cool, maritime-influenced August supported a foundation of bright, natural acidity and slow maturity, resulting in beautifully complex flavors and aromas. Picking prior to a Labor Day heat event allowed the fruit to retain the wine’s alluring and fresh characteristics.
