Tasting Notes

Our 2021 Audentia is a bold expression from our estate. The wine displays a dense, inky core with a garnet hue. It is full-bodied and concentrated, showing a perfumed nose that opens with saturated blackberry, blackcurrant, and brambleberry. Notes are layered with a floral lift and subtle hints of mocha, baking spices, and anise seed. On the palate, it delivers both opulence and poise. There’s a generous rush of ripe red and black fruits—black raspberries, cherries, and black plums. These are balanced by savory undertones of tobacco leaf, graphite, and crushed earth. Silky, fine-grained tannins and vibrant acidity carry the wine through to a long, juicy finish. This wine showcases layered complexity with a graceful tension between richness and restraint. It can be enjoyed in its youth, but also rewards patience, as a few years in the cellar will allow it to soften and develop further nuance.

Winemaking

Grapes for this blend are hand-picked in the vineyard and fermented in a combination of small, closed tanks and 500-liter oak barrels called puncheons, which bring more concentration while enhancing the tannins’ softness. Additionally, the lots undergo a lengthy, almost month-long, maceration period, which adds color, tannin, and complexity of flavors to the Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.

Vintage

The 2021 season produced some of the best fruit in recent years. Early rain led to almost no notable precipitation for the rest of the season, providing an ideal environment for grapes to flower, bloom, and set. Budbreak occurred in early April, followed by flowering and bloom in May. Even ripening occurred during the summer with veraison appearing in early July. Low yields created intensely flavored, smaller fruit. Harvest began with white wine grapes in late July, while red wine grapes arrived at the end of August. With optimal ripening and taste, our winemakers took their time collecting grapes and crafting wines of fantastic character, with amazing color extraction, aromatic intensity, and tremendous balance.

Vineyard

Cabernet Sauvignon has a longstanding history as the Stags Leap District’s signature varietal. The district’s unique location, where erosion from the palisades is the source of its volcanic soils, creates a distinctive characteristic that is now synonymous with the modern reputation for Stags Leap Cabernet Sauvignons. Each of the Cabernet lots are hand-selected from specific vineyard blocks of our estate vineyards and feature thin, rocky soils in its upper reaches, giving way to finer-grained loamy soils at its floor.
