Tasting Notes

This 4th vintage of Iridium is seductive and opulent, lush and richly colored in deep, dark hues, the wine is full-bodied and well-structured with integrated silky tannins that suggest rewards for a bit of cellaring. Dark fruits led by black cherry, ripe plums and black currants join notes of mocha, graphite and cassis. A light touch of golden brown sugar spice from the Hungarian oak joins baking spices and black olive. A memorable, lasting finish is something special, a wine with secrets yet to be revealed, enjoyable now and sure to please as it evolves over the next decade and more.

    Wine Advocate

“The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Iridium comes from three Napa vineyards this year: Meg's vineyard in Wooden Valley, Clairmore (by Lake Hennessey) and Frediani vineyard. It is made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, aged for 18 months in oak: 91% French and 9% Hungarian (95% new). The nose is a little youthfully mute to begin, soon unfurling to reveal pure, fragrant cassis, Black Forest cake and black raspberry scents with nuances of charcoal, new leather, unsmoked cigars and cedar chest. The concentrated, robust, full-bodied palate has a solid backbone of firm, grainy tannins and fantastic freshness supporting the black fruit layers, finishing on a provocative minerally note. 430 cases were made plus 50 cases of magnums.” - Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW

Vintage

A cool spring resulted in normal late March bud break. Temperatures remained fairly cool in May and June, but high temperatures in July and September triggered an early start to harvest. Quality was solid for the vintage overall, with little impact from fall wildfires since most fruit was already harvested and in barrel.

Vineyard

Napa Valley offers an ideal combination of topography, geology and climate with exceptional vineyards and sub-appellations that produce some of the finest expressions of this noble grape. In vintage 2017, winemaker Harry Hansen selected notable lots from vineyards including Meigs Vineyard, Moore Ranch and Calistoga’s Frediani Vineyard. A small amount of Petit Verdot from Oakville’s Gamble Ranch joins the blend.
